Shouldn’t We Put “Jobs First”? (Oct. 4, 2013)

Once again, excessive partisanship is hurting our nation and damaging our economy. Continued dysfunctional politics in Washington has led to a government shutdown.

It’s time to call a truce to the political bickering. No Labels, a bi-partisan political reform organization I helped co-found, is promoting a plan offered by former Republican Governor Jon Huntsman of Utah and former Democratic Governor Evan Bayh of Indiana.

The plan is called “Jobs First” and calls for a “ceasefire” of the partisanship that has shut down the government. The plan would freeze current taxes and government spending which Republicans and Democrats are fighting over until the unemployment rate falls to 6.5 percent.

The battles over Obamacare, the sequester and other contentious issues would be put on hold and the debt ceiling would be raised so that the constant congressional cliffhangers which hamper our economy would end – for at least a while.

It’s not a perfect plan, but it’s better than the current mess. To learn about the “Jobs First” idea and ceasefire petition, go tohttp://www.jobsfirst.com/. Or you can call 1-800-714-0205 to add your name to the petition. You can read more about the plan in aWashington Post editorial here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/avoiding-debt-default-by-calling-a-timeout/2013/09/27/4d002768-27b2-11e3-b3e9-d97fb087acd6_story.html

It’s time to end the chaos. I hope you agree.
